I'm glad he didn't. I went when I was younger and believed what I was doing was right. Now I know it was all BS and lost a part of myself because of it.
My dad fought in Vietnam, and my brother fought in the Gulf War. Young people are easy to get scammed into thinking they would serve the country by joining the military, but in the end they just served the politicians' bank accounts and their arm dealer friends' big sale.
Please don't have any regrets about being in the military. In my family we love the military and we have so much respect for you guys. Still, like OP, the boys looked into joining but decided against it. Normally it was something I would support and even push but the pic says it all. A lot of people lost faith NOT in the military but in the institution and the government forcing you guys to do things no one would ever want. I know it's idealistic and when we thank you you guys are like yeah yeah but your spirit is still so meaningful to us.
Best thing you could have done, what a wonderful parent you are.
I was so tempted to join the air force when I was 18, partly to rebel against strict parents that wanted me to become a doctor and partly to serve my country. So happy I didn't take that path now I am much older and know more about the world and how it works.
I would however gladly fight those corrupt warmongering bastards in the photo, they are the true enemies of freedom and we all know their lies about democracy. It's time we did really defend democracy from those corrupt crooks before they have more chances to send young men off to die for their profit.
I joined around then. Was a decent time to do it. Got out right as Barry and Big Mike fucked it. Now all the brass sit there and have their secretaries make PowerPoint presentations about what to do when a gay brown female doesn't want you to open the door for xer but never told you. And the war on cigarettes got REAL heated. I need a.campaign medal for surviving that shitshow. Oh, and that hysterical afn commercial about "your spouse is juggling a lot of balls right now." We were oconus at the time, so it was extra dumb/funny/true.
I get the feeling there will be a LOT of empty barracks in the coming years. It's going to be really hard for the Left to send our soldiers off to fight in wars at China's behest.

It is sad. My brothers both joined even though I tried to convince him otherwise.
