It always seemed like whenever I would read a negative article, I could always read the comments and see how people really felt. This has been going on much longer than people can fathom.

Agreed. Also due to corporate takeover. From 1995 ~2010 many local news sites, were private and had rudimentary comment / chat sections. Many went under during the Great Recession, where they were picked up by National News Organizations, like USA Today, Advance Local Media, etc. who then removed all chats by 2015 [Charleston church shooting] through 2017 [Charlottesville protests]
