This worries me most of all if true. Not that he couldn’t afford private security, but still. I hope this isn’t part of the motive.

I don't think he would lose protection, but may be able to choose to not have it.

Ex-presidents have information that could motivate a kidnapping attempt. It's in the country's interest to prevent this from happening. National Security updates reportedly do not stop when you are an ex-president as you are defacto on-call as an adviser to the current administration.

There is also the bad look if we lose an ex-president through carelessness.

Ex-presidents have rules to follow too. Presidents and ex-presidents with a Secret Service detail are not allowed to drive themselves on public roads, their phone calls and tech are reportedly monitored, their mail is searched and their movements may be otherwise restricted.

Ex-presidents can decline a secret service detail and get rid of a lot of the above, but it's the ex-president's choice. In 2017, DJTJr declined SS protection he would have been entitled to, preferring privacy. Nixon declined his after a number of years out of office and went private, the only ex-president to do so.
