Smart phones killed off our basic cell phones of the late 90's early 2000's so they all now have an OS. The two remaining OS's are compromised so what can we do to remove Apple and Google from our phones? Is there a blossoming OS that we can support? I will gladly move to it but I suspect that the carriers will start to prevent this. What are our options?

Well, preventing phone updates will block some of their stuff.

Here is a video from Braxman on how to enable more privacy on a stock Android 10 phone: https://youtu.be/6n5UJZn-Vkk

Check out the Rob Braxman Tech YouTube channel. Lots of info on how to "degoogle" phones. You can load an open source version of Android that bypasses normal Google spying. There are some trade offs obviously but probably worth it for most. He is a privacy advocate so lots of good info on Linux phone etc. I think Linux phones are the future. They just needed more mass market support. Looks like that time may have come.

I have used a simple flip phone for years now. Best move ever made. I am back in the real world. I use my brain instead of relying on web searches. I call people more instead of texting. If I do text it is short and sweet. I don’t care if I break or lose the phone. Smart phones are amazing technology it have had a clearly negative affect on our culture. Not having one you realize everyone around you has their face in their phones every chance they get. Zombies.

I never bought on to the smart phone thing. Too expensive, made Apple too rich, too awkward, screen to small etc. I am old and to me a phone and a computer were always two separate things.

I have 2 flip phones (one ATT and 1 Verizon bec V dumped my 3g last yr and I was waiting to see which had better service) and an ipad mini. I love my mini. Not that much bigger than a large smart phone, wide screen like on a desktop, unlimited surfing with ATT for an extra $20/mo whereas Verizon costs me hundreds and is limited surfing. My mini cost me $150 on ebay, gently used from somebody who wanted an upgrade.

My ATT phone is [email protected] and the small lcd screen is already shot but the voice quality is great, even from overseas and I am rural. The Verizon flip ph is a Kyocera and top of the line, but they dont make them anymore bec all mfgrs put all their eggs in the smart ph basket. But a Verizon guy told me about them and I found a good used one on ebay for $40, like new.

I have a ZAAG portfolio hinged case/ cover for my mini that is great so I have a real keyboard, too

Tracphone still sells basic flip phones. The PinePhone Linux phone seems to be gaining some traction.
