Study the license material anyway. Take practice tests. The license is mostly to make sure people know the laws and have enough technical knowledge to operate safely. Back when most transmissions were Morse code you really didn't want people who didn't know Morse code transmitting. That's just common sense.

Can anyone recommend one that’s decent?

You are going to need more than just saying "Ham channel".

What band, what frequency, alternate frequencies (maybe an algorithm based upon the day to compute it?)

Your little baofeng radios will not do you much good outside of a couple of miles (or less in cities).

I might be able to answer some questions for you.... but I can say this... you really need HF for long distance communication.

it would be better to get involved with a local patriot organization so you can have the safety of a community that's near you.

depending on where you live it may or may not be hard to find one. we've got some good options in florida.

We are snowbirds from Mi, here in your beautiful state of Florida, we do belong to the VFW and several other Patriotic org.s but wondering if there were any other options for safety in numbers. We are currently in dade city, but headed down to the glades next week. Any suggestions?

That's not quite how it works. If you're really interested:

  1. Amateur radio operators are licensed by the FCC, there are 3 levels with tests.
  2. Communications must be in the clear, no encryption.

You can probably find a local group of HAMs nearby - go say hi, Essentially it's a person to person thing, and lots are based.

And a lot of communications will end up being ad-hoc especially if this purge continues.

For test messaging Signal is good. For email, protonmail is good. Group chats telegram perhaps.
