Signal posted on twitter saying they've had so many people switch to Signal it has completed bogged down their verification servers. Find the twitter post if you can and show it to family, assure them EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT, so they are convinced it's a good idea again but they'll have to do it at another time.

Trying to do the same. just put it on my phone. Took 3 tries to get code. It worked on the 3rd code. I used the link in the text message. Other comment is correct. Someone posted a screenshot of the series of tweets from signal about an hour ago.
