they are part of the military, which includes the army, navy and air force. I could be wrong however, being a maple leaf syrup sucker.

Well duh, I know that. Not my freaking point. They are soldiers, they fight wars but they are used differently for crying out loud. National Guard are kind of our organized militia. The US Army are professional soldiers. The President is constrained by law to deploy the US Army in the US without very particular things occurring, namely insurrection/rebellion or invasion. I am not sure I can make that any more clear. The Guard can be used in the US for almost anything...

The point of debate is Posse Comitatus which prohibits US Military from operations on US soil. The National Guard does deploy, but is also allowed to operate on US soil in support of operations.

Comments above infer that if they are soldiers vs guardsmen, then PC has been suspended possibly via insurrection Act.

I live in DC and can confirm these are National Guard troops not regular Army.
