Jet's don't typically hover. In fact, very few modern war planes can, excluding some variants of the F35 and the harrier ofc. Are they helicopters or are they circling?
yeah we need some pics. maybe by jets he means planes and it's ospreys? doubt that f35s or Harriers would just hover over a city rather than cruise around
I just looked up F-35 and Ospreys at night. It looks exactly like the Osprey, except for the fact that there were no circular bands of light outlining where the helicopter looking blades are. It was just the three bright lights.
It definitely didn’t look like an f-35 because the tail is too broad on that. It had a thin tail.
I was going to stop on the side of the road and take a picture of it but thought it wasn’t worth it in the middle of the highway to zoom over to the tiny shoulder. If I see it again I’m 100% taking a pic. Also, I had thought many of our military jets had the ability to hover? I will post coordinates of the exact area I saw it below if interested..
No Sir or Ma'am. I'm certainly not military and want to be very clear on that lest someone get the wrong idea, just a citizen who loves military planes. Hovering is a very difficult thing for a plane to do with only a handful of planes the world over being able to do it reliably.
The osprey is only able to because it's a plane/helicopter hybrid of sorts that can rotate its engines, and the F35B has basically a giant fan in the middle of the frame(as well as the ability to angle its main engine) that allows it to push straight up. Otherwise, the lion's share of planes heavily rely on lift from their wings, which requires constant air moving over them.
Also yeah, be safe. For sure.
I, too, wonder what an osprey would have been doing there.
Definitely not. It was a single, jet plane and was just sitting there; completely still. It had three bright lights (one on each wing and one near the tail). I thought it might be a helicopter or a plane moving very slowly but as I got closer it became apparent that it was a plane, specifically a jet. It was odd looking and just stuck out. It was so still I almost thought it was just some very large drone type thing but as I got closer I could see the jet’s dark outline. I don’t know much about aircraft but could tell it was military.
Could be an F35, but.... I have a difficult time thinking there would be one of those just sitting there doing that. There's 1 or 2 variants that can, but they're also very new planes. A photo would have helped us a lot.

Could be ospreys, yeah. I hadn't factored those.

I was traveling west and it was facing east. (Directly in-line with the highway)

My guess based on your description is the F35B. But those jets don’t have ability to hover for long periods of time.
Photo?
