Everyone keeps saying we should have a radio in addition to emergency supplies. What sort of radio do they mean? Just a regular radio? Walkie talkies? A ham radio? What are they talking about?

I have a battery powered AM/FM radio, everyone recommends the kinds with the hand-crank, and after that I recommend a pair of baofeng walkie talkies which can also double as ham radios. Note that are not supposed to broadcast on ham radio frequencies without a ham radio license, although it's fine to listen. I do not recommend a "full" ham radio for anyone without a ham radio license.
