Let me fill you in on a few technical details. Don't take my word for it. Verify.

  1. Signal is completely open source This means that any 3rd party can do independent analysis of the security and every security company who has done so says it's the most secure thing out there.

  2. Signal doesn't encrypt just the message, but encrypts sender and recipient information as well. This means that Android can tell that your phone number is sending texts to signal and receiving them (since they control the OS), but they cannot determine who you are sending the message to or what the message is.

  3. Signal themselves have no way to determine what your message is. The encryption happens on the clients and that's where the keys are determined. Signal is unable to retrieve your account info if you lose your pin.

Unless you build it yourself, there is always a bit of faith involved. I can say that very smart and experienced cyber security experts use it including government trained professionals.

Untrue. Signal is completely open source which means all the code is available for 3rd party inspection.

So if you don't trust those 3rd parties you're free to become a cyber security expert and validate for yourself. No faith required.

depends what you mean by safe? You keep your own keys, but if your device is taken it can be read.

Tech expert here, Signal is totally legit. Make sure you have a unique PIN and turn on disappearing messages. Only risk is if the person on the other end screenshots your messages, so it doesn't help if you don't trust the person you're messaging with.
