There's a > 90% chance it will be Android based. I don't think it's really an issue. It's open source, and they don't need to integrate any Google services.
Yes, they have some more info on their site now, saying it's Android based but a trimmed down fork, so hopefully they can make it safe and sound.
Would be interesting if they could also make it install apps without having to use Google Play store, like when you jailbreak an iPhone so you can install apps that are not available on Apple's App Store.
