The square in front of the Vatican it would normally be more lit. As a matter of fact, the nativities would still be lighted, although I never walked through at 4am.
Looks like a camera malfunction. Look at all the little points of light in the dark screen. They're in the same spots as the bright screen. Of course it could be a media blackout by adjusting the camera.
