American chocolate was cheapened during WW2. They mixed it with wax and used extra sugar to mask the waxy flavor. It pretty much stayed that way.

Because of this, Cadbury in Europe is probably much different than what they sell here in the US.

I knew the UK stuff was good, that's where I bought it. And I know the US stuff, like Hershey's is shit, because it's all fructose syrup now, not sugar. It has that same gross, cloying over-sweet thing all American food has now.

It's because we Americans don't understand nuances of flavor, only bright colors and sugar. We're getting better though.
