It's just fucking bullshit that we can get to this point.

The free market is supposed to protect against things like this from happening. You legally cannot persecute an entity for their views.

Parler is a paying customer of Amazon. They are supposed to have rights.

What happened in this country that allowed for attitudes like this to manifest?

Edit: To the Doomers DMing me that businesses having the discretion to do business with whom they please is the free market, get fucked. You shouldn't be able to discriminate against someone else just for their views. I don't care about whether a gay couple could get a cake and what the Supreme Court said about it. This affects us.

109
ltpayne 109 points ago +109 / -0

Yep... and that Parler CEO John Matz responded like a boss:

“this was a coordinated attack by the tech giants to kill competition in the market place. "

Would be grand if they had a Lawsuit for Antitrust and an Emergency stay by a court by tomorrow...

We don't, and haven't, had a free market for a long long time. It pisses me off whenever people use that term to describe our current market. What we have is a crony capitalist oligarchy.

36
DonJr2024 36 points ago +36 / -0

Free market never meant you can have a monopoly and squash all competition using unfair means.

Any more than free speech means the right to break into a house and yell at people.

14
SquareBites 14 points ago +14 / -0

Agreed. But it just bugs me because I want a free market, but then shit like this happens and there's no recourse. It shouldn't be possible for a business to have this much control over its customers

CactusCactus 31 points ago +32 / -1

I’ll tell you:

Option 1: They have accepted or are accepting the Democratic ruling class’s offer of (presumably) superior incentives for being a part of the alliance. In some cases, Dems may permit these companies to work with and take Parler/Conservatives’ money, until they become a threat. At which point they are expected to drop ‘em with no questions asked.. It’s a win/win for their alliance. Profiting off of Conservative efforts, and putting up a roadblock that could derail it entirely, when it becomes a threat. TD.win is a rare example of a community that survived migration from their former Reddit overlords, and truly thrived afterwards. I’m sure Reddit is on the Dems’ shitlist after what happened. They got so much flak for even letting /r/T_D exist as long as it did.

Option 2: Fear. To Amazon, there is no amount of money they could be making off of Parler that would justify the potential headline “Amazon chooses to continue hosting alt-right hate community Parler, despite outrage and calls to cease hosting”. They don’t know for sure what would happen if they took a stand here, defying the Democrats wishes and breaking from the mold of every other internet company. And there is evidence to support the “Get Woke, Go Broke” idea, but not enough to risk a multi-billion dollar business. Plus, if everyone else is doing it, it’s a much larger risk to break the mold. As a business, they want to stick with what the rest of the crowd is doing. At least if it turns out to be the wrong decision, the blame won’t be solely on them, but dozens of other organizations as well. This is probably why you see even orgs that have NOTHING to do with social media relevant to Trump and Politics (like Spotify and Pinterest. Seriously?) banning him too. It’s all superficial, and about covering their ass + PR.

It’s one of the two. Maybe a little of both.

12
Kaiheitai 12 points ago +12 / -0

They don’t know for sure what would happen if they took a stand here, defying the Democrats wishes and breaking from the mold of every other internet company.

Listen, Amazon is so fucking powerful they could control the national mood regarding Trump in about one second. But Trump and America First are a direct hindrance to their business ideas. Corporations are kind of psychotic in that at a certain point, they only care about profit and control. Amazon is a great example of that.

12
posedgeclk 12 points ago +18 / -6

What makes you think that things aren't going according to plan? Only a complete idiot would put something on the cloud, especially at this size. (Granted, the dude didn't capitalize Internet.) The deplatforming thing has been going on for four SOLID years now. Once you have your servers spread out across enough datacenters, it is almost too much effort to even try. I don't trust Parler, especially the part about them requiring a phone number to join. The same applies to Signal. I don't know how much spying goes on on Signal, but I don't like whose slimy hands have been over it.

12
SnowflakeJuice 12 points ago +13 / -1

You need to keep up with the times. Everything is moving to cloud. Netflix uses amazon servers. The largest companies around are using servers hosted by Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle etc.

If you build your own servers, you still need a co-location. If you host on your own site, you still rely on Telcos for bandwidth.

At some point, you need to rely on the existing ecosystem, and at some point someone is going to have the power to shut you down

10
BasedFatTails2 10 points ago +11 / -1

Ehh truthfully cloud is what allowed Parler to grow so fast. Scaling infrastructure is difficult and very time consuming. And I don’t mean the physical infra, that’s actually the easiest part, getting the distributed clusters going takes acouple clicks on aws/azure vs weeks to months on prem. Don’t blame them, but they should have been more prepared

I've been telling you since the beginning that you cannot "create your own version" of whatever you don't like

you have to fight the battles where they are. Not run away and create your own little community.. create your own little safe space.. Twitter is censoring people.. you must stop Twitter from censoring people.. trying to create your own website is not going to work.. they control the infrastructure. They control the world.. there's nowhere for you to run to.. you can't keep hiding from realit

Trump and the GOP refused to regulate these social media companies or to make them public utilities even though the internet wer critical infrastructure.. but just because they refused to doesn't mean that it's not possible. You can still do it. You just need somebody who's willing..

this internet being critical infrastructure like telephone companies and water companies you need to regulate them.. I know that's a dirty word among the corporatists right wing because they like the idea of billionaires running the country but it's time to break away from the corrupt bullshit that the GOP has fed you for decades.. they are clearly not on your side..

they spent copious amounts of money convincing you to worship billionaires. Convincing you never to take action against billionaires or to use the government for good.. but it's time to ignore them. It's time to reject the GOP and their bullshit talking point

Corporate ideology it's time to reject their corrupt corporate ideology.. it's time to regulate social media.. make them public utilities and they can't censor anybody. They can still keep their profits they just can't censor.. if you can't do that then you can't do what's necessary for the country to succeed and you don't deserve to be in charge of itt

14
Rufus_Shinra 14 points ago +14 / -0

Does anyone here really believe that Trump or anyone creating a new media platform will matter?

The left has ALL the power now. No law will stop them from silencing you. They will get your servers dropped and I bet seize domain names calling it national security.

Trust me, this site will be on their list. The left is emboldened now more than ever, they will not stop.

6
ancientarchitect369 6 points ago +6 / -0

There is always a way. Keep in mind they've been trying to shut down the pirate bay ever since it was created, and while there were a few outages I'm pretty sure it's still up.

Host a website in a underground mountain datacenter in a country with better data security laws if you need to. They try and block your site? Use a vpn/TOR. Without taking down the entire internet, there's really nothing they are going to be able to do to entirely block things like this. All they can do is remove us from their largest platforms, which make us a little harder to find.

9
SnowflakeJuice 9 points ago +13 / -4

Very nice words. Did you stop Twitter from censoring people yet?

5
Kaiheitai 5 points ago +5 / -0

He does have a point, though. The only part I'm not sure of is how to be a part of Twitter but not contribute to them. As for Facebook, I need a break anyway. Besides being controlled by the enemy, I'm disenchanted with the entire experience, and frankly feel better away from it.

5
FiatLux 5 points ago +5 / -0

agreed but why let 'them' keep the profits? everybody who posts there should get a cut based on how many interactions they get.

5

guy i follow elsewhere on the internet said, the difference between fascists and communists is that fascists eventually stop sending people to camps, once all that's left is them they don't turn on each other. communists never stop purging from their own ranks, the killing never ends. so eventually they'll get the point, when it's far too late.

8

They want it to last long enough to consolidate influence and power. Then BLM and wokeism is unnecessary. They’ll be crushed too.

I used to think this, but there are definitely those out there who recognize the horror that the state can inflict. It's just that they aren't the targets this time and its safer to gang up on the current victim.

23
ClownTamer 23 points ago +23 / -0

My hyper leftist friends mostly think it’s cool when the state does it against something they don’t like, and not cool when it’s against something they like. You’ll notice there are no other principles or values or convictions at play there. It’s all about power.

9

But sadly they are.

They don't see that it could easily be turned against them if they fall out of favor.

They should remember that not so long ago being a patriot wasn't considered a bad thing.

Who knows what could change and cause them and theirs to be unpersoned?

But who am I kidding; they are brainwashed to be incapable of empathy for people that they are told are enemies.

When they aren't under threat it's business as usual, even with trump in office. Until he threatened their money making in foreign countries they basically tolerated him. Then it was muh peachmint, coronavirus economy bombing tactics and outright long-planned for election fraud on a massive scale.

When everything was going to plan, when Obama and bush were doing their uniparty thing furthering their agenda and making tons of dirty money? Not a fucking peep. All quiet. Mundane nothing news. Its easy enough. Kohls takes Amazon returns too, so even if they won't pay return shipping you can just drop it off there. Sellers will hate that shit. Most of them are on ebay and walmart market places so you can get them to move off Amazon with little effort.

Make sure you don't do this to third party sellers on Amazon. You'd be screwing over them, not Amazon.

5
UpTrump 5 points ago +5 / -0

Can't blame the small guys. It's really hard to distribute your stuff if you don't go through Amazon

5
Maga4Demmies 5 points ago +5 / -0

I understand where you are coming from and I’m obviously not going to participate in this funny but ridiculous idea because I’ve already cancelled all subscriptions to everything, but that’s the problem right there precisely. It shouldn’t be this way. If everyone stopped using Amazon then these companies would not be emboldened to do shit like this. Anyone who supports the constitution should rid Amazon and the like of their lives. If there’s no alternative, then make an alternative.

3
UpTrump 3 points ago +3 / -0

Exactly. And this is also exactly why these companies aren't scared; they know most Trump supporters won't leave

Also, they don't care a ton about their profits, as long as they get control. Big tech is far more powerful than anything in this world

86

Their usual method is slow boil. I think they are rushing things for a reason. What's the giant rush to impeach Trump? I get they don't want him to run in 2024 but no need to impeach now for that. It's weird.

They're trying to consolidate power for Biden as quickly as possible so that when he takes office there is as little resistance as possible for what they'll be enacting: removal of the 2A.

15
dizzle_izzle 15 points ago +17 / -2

I think they're actually going to try this. I really do.

I also think they can stack the fuck out of the court to prevent legal issues then they'll pass an amendment to kill the 2nd.

We're dead. America as we know it is fucking gone.

3
kirovri 3 points ago +4 / -1

I also think they can stack the fuck out of the court to prevent legal issues then they'll pass an amendment to kill the 2nd.

How should that work? They would need to pass a Constitutional Amendment to kill the Second Amendment, wouldn't they?
To propose a Constitutional Amendment they would need a two-thirds majority vote in BOTH the House of Representatives and the Senate, I don't see that happening.
And once proposed, to actually pass a Constitutional Amendment and add it to the Constitution, it would need to be ratified by three-fourths of the States (38 of 50 States). There is no way 38 states are going to decide to kill the second amendment.

Yes they are scared he may have something, which means they know how guilty they are.

Even if he did have something the time to use it is long past usefulness at this point. That italian thing if it is true seemed promising, BUT Jan 6th has ruined any chance now since GOP caved.

But dont worry Lindsey will strongly lead the charge to revise section 230 after rejecting the chance a few weeks ago. Gotta shill for more cash and support for the next election.

12

4
infojunkie07 4 points ago +5 / -1

The house charges them, the senate convicts and sentences to never holding public office again.

7

5

But, he won’t “win”. Electronic voting just jiggers the percentages to yield the desired winner.

Super easy, barely an inconvenience!

I don't think it's about the platforms themselves. Their soft power just met hard power at the capitol. The people are saying to them "You can think you're going to drag us around wherever and however you want, but we might just come in here in massive numbers and drag you out instead."

These people, these ceo's talking heads and traitors just got a reality check that if the public decides to do so they might die violently. So they're trying to shut down anything they perceive as contributing to that threat. Namely, free speech, the 2nd amendment and people coming together and saying our rights are worth dying for.

Everything America was founded on.

They have the perfect narrative now with their "preventing further violence". In two weeks, everybody will have forgotten about the Capitol or not care that much. It's like how they always try to push gun regulations right in the wake of a mass shooting. It lends momentum. They have an easier time to portray themselves as the good guys. The Capitol is their Reichstag fire.

Its the same reason why BLM and Antifa were able to murder people and get away with it.

39

3

If they can do a divide and conquer thing and keep their own communication, that could work. They can't though.

Odysee and DLive are still up. So are a lot of other decentralized platforms.

11
catch-a-penny 11 points ago +11 / -0

I have to say, the media still has a grip on the general populace, though I think that is due to big tech keeping them relevant. Without Facebook, Twitter et al pushing their narratives I think they'd go the way of MacDonald's if you took away their advertising.

7
50blessings 7 points ago +7 / -0

Yeah some of my "Republican" family members are watching Fox and shit just like, "Well...it kinda sounds like he was inciting violence; he could've worded it differently!" I'm just like, really? How the fuck was I born from your genetics? You guys are doctors and accountants. No wonder this shit happened under their generation's watch. They're just moving on their merry way with buying stocks for the new administration, thinking they can outrun the system, ignoring the fact that I'll be living in this reality for 50+ more years if I'm lucky (is it really lucky if this shit persists?).

2
Frog_Anne 2 points ago +2 / -0

Did Fox actually include the quote, or the clip of him speaking? When I finally saw someone quote him, he said "peacefully" right in the speech!

10
thefall 10 points ago +10 / -0

That enough. If they can kill people with impunity they can do this. Unless the right comes together in a unified stance this will continue.

6
rutabaga 6 points ago +6 / -0

It would have to be a bottom up thing. Decentralized services like odysee and dlive, or other systems, will be immune to being ganged up on, which will happen with Parler and Gab.

If you can make a lbry version of twitter/parler/gab, that will probably be used.

4
sometimescanbefunny 4 points ago +4 / -0

Indeed. People here don't comprehend that if you have the power, nothing else matters. Optics, what's right and wrong, the narrative, all of these can be tailored to fit you if you have the power. You also have the added benefit of being untouchable because most people will leave you alone if you have power.

3
infojunkie07 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yup and public support is just manufactured perception. Now that the opposition is being blocked, banned and kicked out the only voice that remains is consensus .

So everything out there is - yeah the left are the good guys.

22
Kekmanchoo 22 points ago +23 / -1

Like not be leaving office?

19
Twitter 19 points ago +19 / -0

Trump must be seeing this all happening before our eyes, he must know he himself and his entire family is in danger. The left even the Snake(republicans) party are all working together to destroy everything, it's baffling to me from what we all witnessed from holding up entire cities, to burning them down, to even murder and a onslaught of vigorous assaults and none of them did a thing ...EVERY fucking website put up a BLM sign on their website or a donation button after all the mass destruction. My mind is spinning how easy it is for them to brainwash millions.

6
Lovepede 6 points ago +6 / -0

Most of these people have no useful skills outside of power peddling. Trump embarrassed all of them with his inauguration speech, called them all out for leeching off tax payers.

4
CornandSoybeans 4 points ago +4 / -0

And Giuliani, a man who has defeat systematic corruption, is just left hung out to dry.

18
honeymussie 18 points ago +18 / -0

This is what I'm thinking too. It would be much better long term to keep all the trump supporters on the platforms but up the shilling and start the bans one by one over a couple of months. If they won, don't they have all the time in the world? No one would notice if they spread the bans out, the last ban would be forgotten about before the next.

Even the Parler thing, give it at least a couple weeks for people to abandon twitter to really build their user base up, then ban. Hell, they could even work in a few false flags on these platforms so the normies don't question it and stay scared. That would be much more effective and not so "obvious" as doing it a few days after the first big purge. They're trying to silence the internet now. I'm guessing some shit is coming out very soon that they can't stop and they're trying to stop it from spreading.

I am guessing several things. Stopping the free flow of info, not just Trump. Drops like the Hunter one and big tech/Epstien evidence. Arresting Trump for whatever when he leaves office. Or handing him over to Iran.

They want to block people's ability to protest or organize.

4
catch-a-penny 4 points ago +5 / -1

But there are literally thousands of other places to organize, there's a whole internet out there.

7
prospektor 7 points ago +7 / -0

People only know a few sites, though, and once Google cleans up its search results, no normie will find other sites on his own. And the largest of these sites will face the same persecution and deplatforming attempts.

There's a time where retreating further and further is not a feasible strategy anymore. It's about time to take a stand. Like showing up at Amazon distribution centers with a few thousand people and blocking their roads and entries for a few days. For free speech, for small businesses, for fair taxes, etc. Take a page out of the left's narrative playbook to give them bad publicity and a loss of revenue, basically what companies fear when they bow down to woke bullshit.

2
boombaby 2 points ago +2 / -0

Take a page out of the left's narrative playbook

This is what we're going to have to do in all areas, and I don't think we're inclined to do it. We've got to stop playing fair and being nice, and start using their own tactics against them.

Is Gab an app?

31
DIARRHEA_FIGHT 31 points ago +32 / -1

Website. Their app was banned years ago.

18
AngryCanary 18 points ago +19 / -1

They're an app too, you just have to download it from their website, if you run Android. They also have a web browser called dissenter. Honestly, the web browser could be more powerful than any social media move if people started using it by the millions. It would be game changing in a way that most people don't yet understand. If people started using the web browser we could solve almost every problem eventually.

Desktop software is still fairly resistant to the kind of attacks we see on free-speech, and Dissenter allows people to comment on any page - fact checking the news in real time. It also has security and privacy features which would rob a lot of big-techs big-data and advertising revenue. If 75 million Trump supporters downloaded dissenter, we have an actual fighting chance.

Gab is a social media platform dedicated to free speech. You can get an app here:

21
rutabaga 21 points ago +22 / -1

We need a decentralized option. Central servers can be attacked. Odyssey and Dlive do not have central servers, and cannot be attacked.

6
prospektor 6 points ago +6 / -0

Dlive banned Nick Fuentes, so it doesn't really matter that they can't be attacked if they obey the commies anyway.

1
rutabaga 1 point ago +1 / -0

Huh. Well crap.

There are other alternatives, but nothing I know of that's as easy as typing a url in a browser.

4
rickybay 4 points ago +4 / -0

A decentralised internet would be the holy grail. Imagine a peer-to-peer mesh mobile network. Mobile phones are two-way radios with good range. Nothing stopping them talking directly to each other and proxying traffic over longer distances.

One of the challenges is the amount of signaling required to keep the whole network up to date with everyone's current location. My idea is that every residence and office has a phone that never moves and acts as a private home location server (HLS)/forwarding service for the entire household or business. Your ID is then a combination of the GPS coordinates and IMSI of that phone, plus your own unique ID on that residence's private HLS.

1
rutabaga 1 point ago +1 / -0

Hybrid hierarchical/ decentralized systems would be perfect, and if anyone could opt in for a higher up device in that hierarchy, a lot probably would. It would also solve the bitcoin problem, where so many people are communicating that any record making is slowed down.

people moving porn off of twitter LOL

0
AcidOverlord 0 points ago +2 / -2

Gab bans porn. Even drawn stuff like anime. Its one reason why their growth was limited so badly after the initial burst. Torba cares about political free speech, but he's a censorious cuck about anything else that offends his sensibilities or religion. Gab is not a free speech platform. It may be all that we have left, however.

2
infojunkie07 2 points ago +2 / -0

ive no issue with a platform like GAB that bans porn. The whole slide begins when every degeneracy is treated as free speech. See TUMBLR

If people want porn go to a dedicatted pornsite.

1
AcidOverlord 1 point ago +1 / -0

Congratulations, "being conservative" is "degenerate" to the people with the power. You just made the argument for your own silencing, and if Torba is free to ban expression for his reasons, then Twitter is free to ban POTUS for theirs.

We have to stop this shit.

Pretty much every part of the stack is compromised. DNS, ISP, credit card companies, payment processors. The only thing that isn't compromised is HTTPS to direct IP. This is why even governments haven't been able to break blockchain or bit torrent. We need a social media solution pronto that combines those technologies.

27
Jaqen 27 points ago +28 / -1

If they start this crap at the DNS level it is going to go sideways fast.

49

My sentiments exactly.

If amazon wants to create a private club where only their friends can shop there, that is one thing. It is incredibly prickish and shortsighted, but their prerogative. Their mistake to make.

Corrupting the public DNS however is akin to poisoning the well. That affects everyone. Not even remotely acceptable. War crime level fuckery.

You might also want to add encryption hashes sequentially (ie. blockchain) so that malicious seeders can't remove content from a user's account. That way, you guarantee during signature verification that every post the user has made is still in the payload.

I have been speaking out about Apple's absurd app store policies long before Trump even announced he was running.

Back in like 2011 or 2012, Mozilla was trying to port the Firefox engine to iOS and Apple wouldn't allow it for the sole reason that it didn't use the Apple webkit-based app HTML rendering engine, that at the time was inferior to iOS Safari of the same version. Apple's restrictions go far beyond political speech, they directly stifle technological competition.

This happened before Brendan Eich (the inventor of JavaScript, one of the founders of Mozilla. His code contributions essentially built the Netscape codebase that later evolved into Mozilla/Firefox) was forced out of the company by radical leftists. Eich later went on to create the Brave browser.

I'm a normie who is not tech knowledged.

How hard is it to host your own services? I use Wix for my website, I believe they use a Wordpress plugin for their features? But they host it for sure that I know.

How hard is it to run a linux server on my own computer at home to host my site? My ISP I know allows you to run a website with limited use on a residential plan before you have to upgrade to a commercial plan. Is it as simple as store my website files on a hard drive connected to the internet?

2
Noadhominem 2 points ago +2 / -0

Nope. Not simple at all. First, your home server will cripple with a few hundred concurrent users let alone millions. Also as pointed out above, there are other points of attack.

Your domain name is one they people are speculating could be blacklisted. So people would need to know your IP address to directly access your site. Way to complex for people.

Also the ISPs could block traffic to your site.

Also attackers could overwhelm your server and take it down, hence Cloudflare.

Lots involved in keeping an application running smoothly, especially when everyone is out to get it.

Microsoft is contested territory. There's a lot of closet MAGA people at the company, especially since they have a lot of crossover with the military. That's why you've seen the company suddenly start picking up offices everywhere in the US outside of WA/CA/NY.

13

2

Some of us send the D&I trainings to the government's office of contract compliance the moment they start sliding in a marxist/critical theory direction. The whole world is aware of the D&I trash hocked by these companies, so I doubt the trainings leaking is gonna change much (many of them are publicly available anyways). Basically they need to start having strong customer pressure against D&I virtue signal BS and then MAGA people need to get hired and actually stick up for each other.

MSFT has been exploited by Indian nationals as a mechanism to import and enrich their unqualified family members for a long time, and, unfortunately, it shows in the final product. That said, AWS is what it is because the Spheres are wall to wall Chinese nationals, and I don't think we trust them with our servers either. At least the smart Indians tend to be ultra-conservative, but then they import all their dumb cousins, and usually their families are YUGE. Oh, and if you want a trip, go research all the fake degrees in India and China. Literally impossible to compete with them since the upper castes can just buy perfect pedigrees for their kids.

No, Parler should stay separate. If Gab is taken down, we'll still have Parler. We need both.

5
JoePCool14 5 points ago +5 / -0

Agreed. We need more companies and websites to choose from, not more conglomerates. They can be allies but they should remain separate.

22

9

I feel like a broken record lately saying this but the establishment right is exactly where they want to be right now. Being the "bad guys" who are a minority in congress and "putting up a fight" for obvious things and blowing smoke up peoples butts but always ultimately losing out. Meanwhile they rake in stupid amounts of money through laundering/insider trading/bribes/etc and laugh at us behind closed doors.

Both sides of the aisle hated Trump because, if nothing else, he showed that shit can get done if people actually tried.

We’ll see what they do.

Honestly I’d be surprised if they didn’t see this coming.

Amazon, google, most of these big tech companies have gotten as far left as you can get.

We can’t trust them to not abuse their power and I’m hoping this is something people on all sides of the political isle are starting to catch on to.

This reminds me of those early MP3 file sharing days with Napster. They shut down Napster but then there were other ones popping up like Limewire and emule. Now with torrents, VPN's and solid open source torrent client software, everything you want is available and easy to find. They were never able to shut it all down and Pirate Bay still flourishes.

And for a company like Amazon, 75 million Americans probably represents the marketplace demand of up to 100 million Americans, given that approximately 25% of the population is below 18 and cannot vote.

5
bidensmissingbrain 5 points ago +5 / -0

They don't really give a shit. The most the majority of 75 million Americans will do is stop buying from Amazon.com which is really no skin off their chin. AWS is where the money is at (the profits from AWS completely cover Amazon.com's yearly losses) and the majority of AWS whales are either government contracts or international companies, many of whom probably push a lot of globalist ideas.

Their app is added from their website and bypasses the apple and google app stores: https://apps.gab.com/application/5d3f982c9dd49a5b1d9fc881

repealing 230 would make social medias have to decide between censoring everything or nothing. 230 is supposed to read that you are not liable for what users say if you are not a "publisher". Repealing it would mean they are responsible for every comment. When people kill themselves from online bullying twitter and facebook would be immediately liable.

1
anon-dev-fren 1 point ago +1 / -0

"Repealing it would mean they are responsible for every comment" Which means they would be forced to censor, it would be especially problematic for fresh alt-tech platforms since they have less manpower to moderate/censor and less legal resources to defend themselves.

" make social medias have to decide between censoring everything or nothing" To achieve this I think a slight amendment to 230 could be made, to explicitly state it only applies in case they do not abuse their censoring ability (e.g they are a platform, not a publisher).

SELL IT INTO THE GROUND

2
ConvergenceMan 2 points ago +2 / -0

How do you sell it if you don't own it?

3
HumblePig 3 points ago +3 / -0

Buy a put. A 'put' is an option written by a stockholder. An 'option' is like a coupon; the two types are a put and a call.

A call is the right to buy shares at a certain price on the expiration date of the coupon. A put is the right to sell shares at a certain price on the expiration date of the coupon.

If you think Amazon will rise in price, you buy a call. You say you will pay $10.00 for the right to buy Amazon at its current price next week. if Amazon raises by more than $10.00, you've made money! If it does not, you do not have to buy the stock, but you did waste your $10.00.

If you think Amazon will fall in price, you pay $10.00 for the right to sell Amazon at its current price next week. if Amazon falls by more than $10.00, you make money. If Amazon rises, you don't have to sell at the lower price, but you did waste your $10.00.

There's an entire market around these calls and puts, even more lively than on the stocks themselves directly. People look at the ratio and prices of calls and puts to try to guess what the market will do. If puts are making a lot more money, that shows low confidence in the stock, it shows public expectation the value will fall, and so more people sell their stock now before it does fall.

Stock manipulation is theoretically possible by a lot of people throwing money into calls or puts to try to manipulate the detlas (numbers signifying the expected movement of the stock price during a period of time). But if it's not very, very large, and very coordinated, it's just people giving free money to the options writers (people who own the actual stock and write the call/put coupons---hoping that they expire worthless because then they just get to keep those $10.00 you wasted because you don't actually use the right to do anything on that stock).

2
