Fun fact, the MicroTAC pull out antenna was a dummy prop that did not even improve the internal antenna's already excellent performance. Focus groups determined that people in the US expected genuine communications products to have an external antenna, pulling it out gave a placebo effect when you had marginal signal... and I can personally attest that carrying things around with antennas in the 70s-90s bestowed positive nerd cred upon the user.
In the days of expensive 'brick' phones and per-minute airtime It was an easy trick to engage pretty girls in bars -- if they spotted it they would approach you to make a call and save them a trip to use the greasy and unsavory public pay phone.
The only problem is that they were usually calling their boyfriends to come join them. The call would even be itemized on your bill later so you could wallow in your grief.
PinePhone also is Linux and also has hardware antenna toggles. Also you can actually get one instead of throwing $600 down a hole two years ago with nothing to show for it.
t. salty Purism 5 customer who gave up and ordered a PinePhone Pro last month that is shipping next week.
YES. We need phones that WE THE PEOPLE can repair ourselves. I can't stand how all phones anymore you cannot access the electrical parts without essentially breaking it.
Motorola builds in the US. They had a factory in Texas that would build custom designed Moto X phones and ship to your door within 3-5 days of ordering at their peak.
It's possible albeit slightly more expensive obviously.
Wow impressive video. And end of statement: "You can’t stop the signal." "Jesus Christ is King
Donald Trump is President" really great and frogs are good luck 🐸
No wonder the phone looks like a 4A Pixel! GrapheneOS is fully supported on Pixel 3 and newer. Now to find a good used Pixel as I am not giving money directly to Google and I do not want to pay for 5G communications chipset that I'll never use anyway.
According to every phone geek who has seen it they are claiming it's the Pixel 4A phone running GrapheneOS. Both are widely available today as are alternative app stores for getting non-google apps loaded.
Aesthetic maniac here: i hope itll be green and protective cases have frogs on them. I hope they'll allow ppl to make custom cases for a Pepe case too. I know its such a minor thing but colours bring attention to the buyer and it would attract normies like flies to honey.
This makes me happy! I will be purchasing one bc I have an iphone and they are forcing the latest update. Right now I've got bluetooth, cellular and radio turned off on it because a message kept popping up all day saying it was going to install the update tonight. I will see if turning everything off prevented the install tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I also had started looking for regular old gps system so I would have to take my phone with me anymore but they are very prevalent now.
It is time to get a new phone so hopefully this one will be a good alternative for me.
Hearing reports it will run a modified Graphene OS. Pixel 3 and newer owners can load this OS right away, no need to wait. Pixel 4 or newer is recommended for long term support and feature upgrades. More info here: https://grapheneos.org/faq#device-support One can load apps without using Google's play store. I'd be shocked if the alternative app stores don't get a huge boost as patriots ditch Google services.
I hope this actually pans out. My Android is starting to get to the end of its lifecycle. I'm going to try and hold out for this phone before turning this one in.
I'll consider their phone once they get their goddamn website to operate consistently. I've been trying for an hour to do something as simple as add a profile picture. Every time, the site is either "in maintenance" or "there is a problem on our side" when I save my changes.
Shut up and take my money!
That dance wasn’t as safe as they say.
It was the boneitis all along.
Joe's case, it's boneritis.
me three
Perfect timing! looking for a new phone
Me too
I want a gab phone
I hope it has hardware switches to turn off things like GPS, microphone, camera, etc.
A removable battery would be nice as well.
And giant buttons!
i would like to bring back the pull out antenna. it was so satisfying to whip out.
Fun fact, the MicroTAC pull out antenna was a dummy prop that did not even improve the internal antenna's already excellent performance. 90s simping
And the flip phone. WITH a touch screen. That closing snap was also vary satisfying.
Lindsey??? That you ol boy?
I want a touchscreen phone with the durability big an old nokia. You could run that thing over with a tank and would still work
Can we get a screwed down blackberry again? I miss the 7200 series so much
okay boomer just kidding, i'm a boomer
Okay, boomer. (Not a boomer)
We got too many boomers up in here (I'm a millennial)
Gen-X here. Now we’re a multi-generational thread.
PinePhone also is Linux and also has hardware antenna toggles. Also you can actually get one instead of throwing $600 down a hole two years ago with nothing to show for it.

I'd love to have one of those. But that price tag is a little too rich for my blood.
I want a modular phone. One where you can update parts like a computer. Upgrade ram, camera, display, network, storage, etc. separately.
I like the way you think. I'd love to build a phone piece-by-piece to suit my needs the same way I would build a gaming PC.
YES. We need phones that WE THE PEOPLE can repair ourselves. I can't stand how all phones anymore you cannot access the electrical parts without essentially breaking it.
If you have a Pixel 3 or newer you can already load GrapheneOS to obtain privacy. That same OS is rumored to be running on the Gab prototype phones.
I hope they don’t make them in China or it’s a big trap
I can't imagine that Andrew would get them from China.
It's nearly impossible to find a hardware vendor outside of Asia these days that can handle large order scale. Sadly.
Taiwan and South Korea do lots of hardware manufacturing.
It also costs around 2 grand if I'm remembering correctly for the US version, and is total shit in comparison to any other phone, save the Pinephone.
So what. I like what they're offering and that's not terrible. I'll pay a premium for privacy.
Motorola builds in the US. They had a factory in Texas that would build custom designed Moto X phones and ship to your door within 3-5 days of ordering at their peak.
It's possible albeit slightly more expensive obviously.
But people would pay for it. After all, we fork over $1k for an iphone.
Need to make them in Eastern Europe like Poland or Ukraine they hate commies with a passion
Hehe I’m originally polish and we don’t let anyone fuck with us no more. We learned our lesson during WW2 when hitler and Stalin fucked us.
first stage McMahon level of interest
This Gab phone announcement is kinda like Stone Cold's music starting.
We need a break away from centralized anything. Decentralized platforms need to grow out of this shit soil of these massive tech platforms.
Oh, this is good!
Wow impressive video. And end of statement: "You can’t stop the signal." "Jesus Christ is King Donald Trump is President" really great and frogs are good luck 🐸
I will totally buy it, regardless of features, as long as it rings or texts
This
They are Google pixels that run GrapheneOS (google stripped android) I believe.
So it's boycott Apple because they're leftist, and go with... Google? The company famous for its fair treatment of conservatives and Trump supporters?
Google doesn’t own Android.
I'm pointing out that Google makes Google Pixels.
Yes, they do. Android itself is open source however.
The gab phone looks exactly like pixel 4a
No wonder the phone looks like a 4A Pixel! GrapheneOS is fully supported on Pixel 3 and newer. Now to find a good used Pixel as I am not giving money directly to Google and I do not want to pay for 5G communications chipset that I'll never use anyway.
Yay! I hope it's affordable!
The blog post is long on sentiment and short on details.
What's the hardware based on?
What OS?
You Win!!
Someone said grapheneos. That's what I use, it's phenomenal
Thanks for the tip, I'll research. I would've guessed PostmarketOS. Shows how much I know, lol.
I love pmOS but "next year is the year of Linux on the phone".
I think a grapheneos phone plus the upcoming pinecorder might be ideal. Or whatever their "kinda pinephone plus lorawan minus cell" device is called
According to every phone geek who has seen it they are claiming it's the Pixel 4A phone running GrapheneOS. Both are widely available today as are alternative app stores for getting non-google apps loaded.
di-lithium crystals and central warp drive
Can anyone comment on the Pine phone? I saw something on it but am unfamiliar
Every time they release a batch they sell out before I can get one :(
What? You mean like Google Phone?
Looks something like it. First thing i want is a TD.WIN app!
The phone looks like a Pixel 5 or perhaps a Pixel 4a.
Might have some type of AOSP rom. Most likely without google services.
Aesthetic maniac here: i hope itll be green and protective cases have frogs on them. I hope they'll allow ppl to make custom cases for a Pepe case too. I know its such a minor thing but colours bring attention to the buyer and it would attract normies like flies to honey.
I'm so doing this.
Sold.
Take my money
Please!
Maybe dumb question, but can the carriers like ATT/Verzion/TMobile/Sprint prevent the phone from working with their service?
I’m buying one for sure. Done with apple and google.
This makes me happy! I will be purchasing one bc I have an iphone and they are forcing the latest update. Right now I've got bluetooth, cellular and radio turned off on it because a message kept popping up all day saying it was going to install the update tonight. Interest piqued!
I just want a small, google-free phone. A ~4" android phone running something like Lineage.
Hearing reports it will run a modified Graphene OS. Pixel 3 and newer owners can load this OS right away, no need to wait. Pixel 4 or newer is recommended for long term support and feature upgrades. I will spend my life savings on one of these holy shit
As long as it's not from china then good.
I hope this actually pans out. My Android is starting to get to the end of its lifecycle. I'm going to try and hold out for this phone before turning this one in.
I'm so getting this!
Can they make their website work first?
I haven't been able to log into Gab all day.
still waiting for the GibGob app.
take my 600$ stimulus!!
Jesus. About time they made freedom marketable, though I suppose that’s our fault more than anything.
First they gotta fix their website.
I'll consider their phone once they get their goddamn website to operate consistently. I've been trying for an hour to do something as simple as add a profile picture. Every time, the site is either "in maintenance" or "there is a problem on our side" when I save my changes.
Yeah it worked just fine right before all this.
That's nice because my Blackberry 10 os phone going to die in 1-2 years.
Can it have a built in 22 lr for backup?
I hope it’s not some shitty locked down Android OS with a 2” touchscreen, 1GB of RAM, and sells for $700 though
