Mods, u/doggos

Please, for the love of God. Sticky this. If we don't start making real changes in the tech landscape, we will lose everything. A web browser is a more powerful tool against censorship than any social media website. It is the gateway to the internet and search. Software like a web browser is harder to de-platform than a single website.

Facebook is not on our side, Google is not on our side. If we do not support those on our side, we will lose.

The ability to comment on any page makes the entire internet a free-speech zone, but it only works if people adopt it. Not only that, privacy tools built into Dissenter rob big-tech of their data and advertising revenue. If you have any foresight, please sticky this.

I can confirm Dissenter is entirely useable, I installed it last night. It's just a fork of Brave, and it uses the Chrome web store for extensions, etc so not much pain involved in switching.

Gab talked about this and the fact that they have been preparing for this moment since they kicked offline a couple years ago. I have been on for a couple years and like the way they run their site. I would be all in on this .

Gab overlay-ed a comment section for any website you are on, I mean any website it is really genius.

Exactly, I love Parler and I hope they continue to have a strong presence. But in comparison to GAB they are Larpers. It's unlikely that they actually upset the apple cart in a way Dissenter is capable of, when their entire platform is not based on innovation but simply an existing formula with different leadership - which is easily changed or corrupted with time.

It's a shame they have more users than GAB, because the only reason they have more users is because media felt safe giving them fairly neutral press during the summer while they didn't with GAB. Parler isn't fundamentally different from legacy social media, and requiring a phone to register makes them actually far more susceptible to censorship.

I feel like they will either be destroyed or live long enough to become just another tool of oppression. Parler already blocks TD links. That should tell you something. Parler is capitalizing on a trend, while Gab is far more inspired from a technical perspective. Gab is an open-handed pimp slap to media and big-tech censorship, while Parler is hoping to be republican Twitter.

Gab's creator, Andrew Torba is a visionary and now a hero of mine. With Musk, Trump, and Ramsay.

can we make a comprehensive list of alternative apps, platforms, and devices to use? I am so ready to ditch anything google related. All I know so far from the last few days are Gab, Parler, Stremio, Gab Phone and now this browser. We should make a free speech list

Who uses chrome still?

5
AngryCanary [S] 5 points ago +5 / -0

Chrome is the most used web browser, unfortunately. Firefox - while less powerful of a company - is even more ideologically motivated.

65% of web traffic. Nobody else even comes remotely close.

2
TruuthSeeker 2 points ago +2 / -0

I know I was being sarcastic. I have been getting asked routinely if their are alternatives most don't use a vpn so I send them to opera, because atleast they have a built in vpn .. how operas ideological stand is I'm not sure, however anything to limit interaction with google is a win in my eyes

3
AngryCanary [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Got it, send them to Dissenter from now on. Opera VPN is not a privacy VPN. While it's still a useful free service (if people actually turn it on) to hide your location and IP from websites, they've never said they don't store or use your web traffic. In other words providing web traffic to Opera instead of Google for advertising at best, and a honeypot at worst. While I'd rather give Opera my web data than Google, it's still far from ideal. The Gold standard should be Dissenter + a secure VPN.

Thank you good to know! Will do moving forward!

Is duck duck go still a good option? I just recently switched to it.

5
AngryCanary [S] 5 points ago +5 / -0

Yes, Duckduckgo is probably the best option for search at this point. They have a good balance of privacy versus accuracy, and I often get better results from DDG than Google for general search.

Appreciate the response brother, thanks.

use an adblock, thats the most effective thing you can do. ublock origin on any browser. pay the creators you enjoy most directly. stop making them beholden to ad platforms. direct payment allows them to switch platforms and be nimble.

AngryCanary [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Dissenter has built in ad-blocking and privacy features, as it's built on top of Brave. The ability to overlay a comment section on top of any webpage, enabling real-time public scrutiny of the news as well as ad-blocking and privacy features, would help rob big-tech of data, ads, and narrative control. It's brilliant, if we could only get people to switch. Unfortunately, as a movement we are about as organized as a herd of cats and nobody seems to to see the big picture. I've been on TD 5 years and we still have done zero work in building alternative infrastructure outside of our own community. It's like we're trying to lose the culture war.

i want them to bring back dissenter as an extension.(its possible with developer mode which i think is easy enough to enable with a guide.) the browser itself has not been updated since they released it. its running on a year old fork of brave browser. browser updates are generally to plug security holes. i like gab. i like dissenter as a tool. its a shitty browser.

1
AngryCanary [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

True, you can still download and install the dissenter extension on Brave - but not through the Google Chrome app-store. They have also removed the link to download it on gab. Major oversight in my opinion. Once more people get on Gab and they stabilize their services, hopefully Torba will address this issue with his growing audience. I would write a guide on how to do this, but it would probably die in new.

canuckspionage 1 point ago +1 / -0

i didnt know it still worked in brave. doesnt even have the developer popup like chrome. bit slow right now but thats probably the 600k new users over at gab.

download https://github.com/gab-ai-inc/gab-dissenter-extension/releases/download/r12/dissenter_chrome.zip

unpack .zip

open brave and go to extensions -> enable developer toggle -> load unpacked -> select the dissenter_extension_chrome_v019 folder.

if brave bans it like chrome/firefox did go install the janky dissenter browser.

incidentally brave on mobile allows for background playback of video from any website, youtube included. youtube vanced is also a thing and is basically the youtube app with no ads and background playback enabled.

Went on google play, and it isnt there as an app. Weird. Fuck i hate google. Cant wait for the gab phone.

3
AngryCanary [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

The gab app has been blocked on Google play store for over a year. Click on the link https://apps.gab.com/ and follow the instructions to download and install the app.

The Dissenter browser is a desktop application though.

Brave has so far proved to be another good choice. It's good to keep both on the toolbar.

4
AngryCanary [S] 4 points ago +4 / -0

Dissenter is actually based on Brave, with the added functionality of being able to comment and view other dissenters comments on any webpage. It's an open handed pimp slap to media and big-tech censorship.

1
GoingCamaro 1 point ago +1 / -0

Got it

1
Crankyboy 1 point ago +1 / -0

Brave is also very good. Dissenter is based off of Brave fyi.

2
AngryCanary [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Dissenter is built on top of Brave. It's Brave with the added ability to overlay a comment section on any webpage (such as news). It's hard to overstate how game changing that would be if millions adopted it.

if only i could get gab to fucking open in my web browser 10% if the time, that would be a start

1
Comntrinchief 1 point ago +1 / -0

Is there an iPhone app for this browser? I can’t find it if there is one

2
AngryCanary [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Unfortunately not, and probably unlikely. The app store banned Gab's website for allowing speech, they certainly aren't going to let them be the gateway to the internet.
