Yeah, CBS these days are cheap and can be had at most truck stops. I have one in my kit. Short range, about 8 miles in average terrain, but better than nothing.
POTS is mostly gone or poorly maintained (info from a Telecom worker) because telecoms want to phase pots completely out. Most "landlines" are actually VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol).
A bit more info: the telecom worker in question is a close relative. And he worked for BellSouth before the AT&T buyout, and still works for AT&T. He had a Corporate handout he received talking about the plans to phase out POTS, one of which was to delay or outright refuse to repair/replace old lines unless they could replace with Fiber. So yes, your lines are likely in poor shape, with cracked insulation and moisture in the lines. The same telecom worker lives in a very rural area with only POTS and deals with awful service that gets worse whenever it rains.
My dad designed for Motorola. They were able to make pagers and phones without antennas by using the human body as one. Idk if I’m allowed to say that this causes cancer
I have CB radio in my truck. "Break break one nine, I have no panties on!"
Old CB? Still use one everyday.

Call tree?
what about buying a landline phone? I still have one. There used to be call lists in emergencies.

That actually explains a lot of the crappy service I've been recieving for the past couple years. I just never trusted cellphones (gives you cancer)
