Nationalism is very similar to patriotism, unite the country under the flag or the nation. It's required in a multicultural highly diversified country. This is why globalism will ruin the US.
The right and left scale is a useless measurement, add more dimensions to it like libertarian and authoritarian. Socialism is a bit to the left and very authoritarian. Communism is on the far edge of the left and authoritarian but it's followers think they're far left and libertarian.
Liberalism and centrism should be close to the middle of the scale, the actual ideology is alright but very few are there. Many lefties claims to be in the middle just to they can accuse everyone else for being far right or far left.
This might come out as an unpopular opinion but the whole MAGA movement seems to be close to the center, with republicans a bit to the right. Far right doesn't exist because true far right means you'll have practically no government and no taxes. Somalia is far right.
And that's why the left feel threatened, someone is taking the actual place in the center they claim as theirs, now this will make the left look like left, and they don't want it. They want to appear as normal so they can keep claiming everyone else are extremists.
