Your mistake is that you assume they're doing this because they think it makes sense. That is not the case. They have an agenda, and they look for anything that supports the agenda and push it, while ignoring everything that goes against it. It's a lot like a religion, and it's hard to convince someone that their religion is wrong, especially when they grow up believing it. Having beliefs is fine, but when those beliefs turn to actions that infringe on other people's rights is when it starts becoming a problem.
