Who wanted to in the first place? How much real convenience did that stuff provide? Take agency, including physical agency over your life.

Heading into the 2019 holiday season, I saw $160 "smart mugs" that were wifi enabled and controlled the temperature of your coffee through a phone app. I wondered at the time if that was some sort of high water mark for ridiculous electronic devices.

I know and I get the allure. However, I am 51 and grew up reading and watching science fiction and think Idiocracy should have win an Academy Award. I appreciate labor saving technology, I do. At some point though the it just leads to physical and (more importantly) mental atrophy.

It's a first world thing. People in a wealthy society will actually buy the stuff and accept the planned obsolescence that means you have to buy a new one in 8 years because it won't support the OS updates.

The main reason is probably because "this is what they told us the future would look like".
