Google, Apple, and Amazon have shown everyone they're going to censor speech they don't approve of.

So who still wants to have a 'smart home' where all of your major appliances are connected to the internet and controlled by the department of truth?

Home Assistant, Hubitat, and openHAB are smart home hubs that don't require access to the cloud. You can fully automate your home locally.

I've used home assistant on a raspberry for several years for this exact reason. Nothing in my suite wants to, or can, talk over the internet.
