Even doing so, an update will override settings which most have experienced before myself included. Stop it from auto updating and or download the APK file off the web

APKs are for Android. If you have Android, root your phone and install another operating system. I use LineageOS but there are several good options available today like E.foundation and Graphene.

XDA-Developers is a good forum to learn more about rooting and installing a new OS, but it's a typical internet forum so you'll have to dig around your phone's sub forums for step by step instructions.

I think it works both ways it’s also for developers so they don’t accidentally delete the app that can be in multiple versions across multiple devices.
