There were even gnostics who believed the Yahweh of the old testament was an evil spirit and Jesus gave them secret revealed knowledge to evade him; they were an early christian denomination. They were purged and most of their literature burned. The council of Nicea decided which books were going to be canon in the bible and which were going to be burned (e.g. gospel of Judas, gospel of Mary Magdalene and many we will never know about because no copies survived) but also which were politically acceptable as state religion in the roman empire. That's a big ugly compromise at the root of catholicsm. They've always seemed very focused on power and wealth in the here and now to me, which is not very consistent with their mission statement.
