Yeah, the two points I can think of in favor of the theory are that General Flynn tipped Trump off and it'd help explain Pompeo not being swamp, but then they could've been acting alone as patriots.

The military probably could have handled the Taliban, the actual force that is not the broader ideology (for that it would've required other tactics), the problem was the goal never was to truly handle the Taliban.
