Private sales are still legal in almost all states. There's no paper trail if you paid cash to buy a gun from somebody or you inherited one or were given one by someone you know.

Not true at all. Guns change hands with no record of it every single day. I see people swap guns at work from time to time, and that makes 2 guns lost in one transaction. It would take them over 100 years to track down every gun in circulation right now.
