Especially to you younger pedes - it doesn't matter what you think the law ought to be, it only matters what the law is. Sometimes people think that they have a good moral justication for a crime they committed. It could be based on an antiquated law that does not apply (like the articles of confederation), the bible, some arbitrary moral principle, whatever. Also remember that the law is applied and interpreted by people who may have political leanings. It's just a fact of life, it's not perfect but it's the best system we have.
The ultimate check on authority is not you and your cousin Lenny - it's other authority. Separation of powers.
So especially to you younger idealistic pedes: be smart, be wise, and obey the law.

You're not going to get them to understand that there was and still are other options. And even if all other options had been exhausted, there are better more effective ways to respond. They think this is going to play out like an action movie.
