On Wednesday, a Joint Session of Congress convened to count, challenge, and certify states’ electoral votes. This important procedure occurs every four years.

Even though many of my colleagues and I were harassed, demeaned, and threatened — even accused of treason — for daring to raise objections to certain states, challenges to a state are common, and part of our Constitutional process.

This year, however, shortly after the Joint Session convened, the Capitol was overrun by angry protestors.

I am appalled by the violence and destruction that took place on Wednesday, and I condemn it unequivocally.

Tragically, several Americans lost their lives on Wednesday, including an Air Force veteran and a member of the United States Capitol Police .

Violence must never be America’s answer to political disagreement. The heinous acts of the rioters were the complete opposite of the Constitutional process our Founders envisioned.

We are a nation of laws, not mob rule. We effectuate change with ballots and voices, not fists and fires.

After several hours, the Capitol was secured, and the Joint Session once again reconvened.
