It’s much more than that... looks like a majority of the east coast now.

What’s going on here?

Nothing above 18,000 ft. FAA shut it down from NC to NJ, said it was due to Covid ! HAHAHA Right

It's a high altitude precaution for the new variant of Space Covid 1999.

Wouldn't there be more controllers to be able to assist in case some go down??? That's crazy to shut down such a large airspace because one or even a few controllers contacted covid...

Yes, the air traffic below 18,000 is being handled by the local facilities in their respective regions

When I first saw "Closed for Cleaning" I immediately pictured a vacuum cleaner with wings.

I live in close proximity to both Reagan and Dulles airport and I have heard nothing but airplanes all day today and all weekend. I’ve assumed the increase in air traffic has been Trump supporters going home. The airspace is definitely not closed. In the time that I’ve typed this comment I have heard 3, I’m not exaggerating.

Edited To Fix: I meant to say Dulles airport and DC airport** not “Reagan and DC airports”

It was temporarily a large area around DC that was totally shut down, then later an altitude restriction, and then it was lifted, possibly due to Air Force 1 taking off sneaky like.

Friend of mine left on plane a couple of hours ago and pilot came on to say that flight time would be longer than planned due to DC airspace being closed.

Might be due to covid closure of DC traffic control center:
