King's version has no hedge maze, the Jack Torrance character is way less menacing, its ending is ridiculous, and the Hotel is portrayed more as a spoooooky ghost house rather than a place of pure metaphysical evil. It's still not a bad book, but Kubrick changed all these things for the better and King cried like a bitch over it for years.
