I was watching some news coverage of Reagan's victory in '80, and the Republican states were all blue. The tin foil hat part of me says that it's because the slogan, "better dead than red," was a bit too on the nose.

Projection. Commies in media changed it in 2000 so that Dems were not synonymous with CCP/Commie Red.
I’m too young to know firsthand, but I believe it was in 2000 that the colors switched.
