Read the entire article, not just the headline. This was discovered years ago. The actual discovery is that the "atmosphere" extends further than we thought. And by atmosphere in this case they mean a density of air so low that it includes several atoms per square meter.

It does not mean the moon is closer than the 1/4 million miles we know it to be.

So the Van Allen Radiation Belt is in Earth's atmosphere too??? How is this possible. Nothing makes sense anymore.

That would mean the van Allen belt is further out than the moon. If true, we would be able to reach the moon without leaving a certain level of our atmosphere because the van Allen belt would radiate past this point in theory. I don’t know how much I believe any of that going back to the moon landing for starters
