As a motorcycle rider in East Texas, I can vouch for the fact that hitting a bug with your lips or the tip of your nose at 70mph hurts like a mutha. Wearing a bandana over face helps it not hurt quite as bad.
Took a June bug to the throat at high speed once. I bought protective gear after that. Well, at least what passed for protective back in the day. Today's gear is practically armor.

Pre-covid, some folks would ride their motorcycles with a bandana over their face to keep the bugs off.

It wasn’t a bandana though. It was one of those blue surgical masks. But hopefully he had it on for big prevention & not covid prevention.
