I know Trump is the Commander in Chief, and has authority over the troops. That didn't stop the NG from being directed into DC without Trump's directive on Jan. 6th.

That was prior to the rally. This was done by Governors after the 6th independently. Governor's can deny sending if they want, PA Governor seemed all to happy to announce he was sending them down, he hates Trump.
Nope, NG is actually called by State governors. DC NG is the only unit that is under POTUS control, unless they are federalized by the President. That can happen if 1. Foreign entities invade 2. there is an insurrection or 3. can't get the job done with regular troops

Trump sent them in for the rally. He hasn't sent them back. He said it in his teatter video
PA sent them afterwards. That's what I said. Anything after the rally was by Governors, they weren't sent down to help POTUS.
