Yep. gotcha. Troops are rarely told specifics until they are boots-on-ground. The reason for it is simple: OPSEC (Operational Security). The enemy cannot know where you are going, when, why, and how if the troops, themselves, don't even know. In today's tech environment, all it takes is one young soldier/marine/sailor/airman to blow the entire mission by leaking details onto the internet.
Your reservist friend will find out what he's doing AFTER he gets there and AFTER they take his phone away.
