Try asking deep leading questions. It's called the "Socratic Method" of teaching. It allows them to form the connections themselves as opposed to just telling them what is happening. Lay some pieces out and let them put the puzzle together themselves. Give them a few pieces at a time so they don't get spooked.
This is also one of the most powerful ways of conveying ideas known to mankind.
