For maximum efficiency (maximum distance thrusted over time) and because there is an even number, every other one thrusts back and forth while the others either stay put or do the opposite motion. You can simulate this easily by reducing the number to four and using your index fingers and thumbs either in the air or on a surface (easier):

  1. Do a pinch on both hands 🤏 by touching each index finger to its opposing thumb and then unpinching them followed by..

  2. Simultaneously touching each index finger together and each thumb together and then untouching them..

  3. Repeat.

Once you get the hang of it, speed it up to get the full effect.
