I know you are to follow orders from the President, generals, etc

But in times of hardship or times of authoritarianism, would the military actually follow through with these orders?

The President. The President is always the Commander-in-Chief unless Congress does something to change that.

Although the irony is one general defied Trump's orders to remove troops. What happened to him? Nothing I know of.
