Because a "prominent person" promoted it.

I have no beef with Parler, i hope it comes back but following is a dumb idea.

We are supposed to be our own leaders.

12
HeavenlyTrumpets 12 points ago +12 / -0

exactly. Parler is far from a "town square."

5
VA_MAGApede 5 points ago +5 / -0

I believe you are correct. Bongino, Levin, and host of others endorsed.

Dan Bungholio?

ChilledCovfefe 26 points ago +26 / -0

Parler had an app, so it was easier for people to use on a phone. Now the playing field is level with Gab and I think gab will be the winner.

9
zillat 9 points ago +9 / -0

We need both, should not put our eggs in one basket!

7
CertainlyNotEdward 7 points ago +7 / -0

Maybe, but Gab needs to scale much faster than they have been.

3
abstr4ct 3 points ago +3 / -0

gab seems only able to keep a half broken site barley up, they need to scale faster.

4
Kraznaya 4 points ago +4 / -0

We can't bitch about Gab not scaling faster when they literally had to build an entire internet infrastructure from the ground up to host their service without any funding beyond small donations, merchandise sales, and fees from the few people who subscribe to their service(s).

They don't have the near-limitless resources of AWS or Azure that allow them to instantly spin up any additional capacity they need to meet surging demand. They don't have venture capital backing to scale up rapidly.

2
Kinestron 2 points ago +2 / -0

I'm not sure why more people don't get this. They were cut off by Visa, Mastercard and Paypal. Now they can only accept donations via Bitcoin or check.

1
abstr4ct 1 point ago +1 / -0

GAB is getting the best load test. lol

1
abstr4ct 1 point ago +1 / -0

true.

2
redd_i_ter 2 points ago +2 / -0

I think Andrew said there were 600,000 new users just yesterday, so I'm sure they're not just sitting there waiting for it to slow down. They have actual physical servers to stand up and bring online, versus just allocating more cloud resources.

It's been like this every single damn time I try to join. Always just a clusterfuck.

1
ViduusMAGA 1 point ago +1 / -0

They can't scale faster for the exact reason you're going there. They buy physical servers instead of amazon.

2
Imransgarage 2 points ago +2 / -0

App makes no difference. People followed the cheerleaders and got burned.

DeepstariaEnigmatica 20 points ago +21 / -1

I've been saying Parler was a honeypot from the start, and nobody would listen or believe me.

It sucks because it's essentially being called a conspiracy nut while suffering from the Cassandra complex.

Don't trust your banks in the future.

6
IncredibleMrE1 6 points ago +6 / -0

I tried too. Nothing against Bongino, the Mercers played him. Now they have a massive conservative database that they can sell to the highest bidder.

Agree - Parler was clearly a trap. It exploded onto the scene to give the right the perception of having a lifeboat. It was designed to fail.

The entire established system is a trap. The grid is a mechanism of control that is now being deployed for the purpose it was actually designed for in the first place.

And them retaining EXIF data on pictures that you upload, showing what device you took it on, the time, and the friggin' GPS coordinates.

That shit is not even a rookie mistake.

2
deleted 2 points ago +2 / -0
1
CertainlyNotEdward 1 point ago +1 / -0

They've been discussing it on the chans. You can look at the data yourself, but be careful with Linux+VPN+scripting disabled if you're going to, just in case it's a honeypot.

1
deleted 1 point ago +1 / -0
1
Jaqen 1 point ago +1 / -0

The rookie mistake happened one step before that, when the users uploaded pictures that still had metadata in the first place.

These problems will keep happening as long as the userbase is uneducated.

2
CertainlyNotEdward 2 points ago +2 / -0

There's no option to disable EXIF on iOS. Ergo, the responsibility was the app's.

1
deleted 1 point ago +1 / -0
1
Jaqen 1 point ago +1 / -0

Or the responsibility of the user to understand their tool, and how it works. Hence never uploading directly from their phone. Export the image first.

The more we infantilize the end user the worse the problem is going to get. We need smarter users, who then reject the services that aim to abuse them. This creates opportunity for competitors, who can take advantage of the needs of the more savvy shoppers.

Some may dismiss this as free market optimism, but this is a deeper problem than that. The core issue is knowledge of tools, and how to use them. Lest we find ourselves surrounded by a sea of knives with the tips broken off, and a swath of mangled paint can lids.

Use the right to for the job, and use it correctly. Or end up unproductive and possibly injured.

2
CertainlyNotEdward 2 points ago +2 / -0

Guessing you work in tech and probably use Linux. I do, too.

The thing you don't understand is we have specialists for a reason. Not everyone can be expected to fully understand every tool they use and it's silly to gatekeep based on that.

Case in point, you don't require soccer moms to understand how automatic transmissions work. You don't require chefs to understand how the injectors on their gas stove works. You don't require people riding elevators to understand how the emergency breaks work.

And you don't expect social media apps that supposedly cater to free speech enthusiasts to do creepy shit like retain location data on photos. It's called input sanitization and every programmer should practice it.

1
Jaqen 1 point ago +1 / -0

Mostly agree, definitely on Parler needing to sanitize EXIF data, however if the user uploads a non sanitized copy, that file exists somewhere on Parler's systems, and this hack was all about tapping into their backend maliciously. The EXIF data was never exposed on the front end. So this is more of a failure to purge the original file problem than anything else, which is a problem most of the services are going to have, knowing what we know about how companies love to keep data around.

Regarding tool use, I do not expect the soccer mom to be able to know how to rebuild a Powerglide, but I do expect her to be able to drive the minivan down the road without taking unnecessary risks like blowing through red lights.

It is all layers of abstraction. No one expects the average person to program in assembly language, but we do expect them to know the basics.

I guess what I am advocating for is to raise the bar for what those computer usage basics entail. They should definitely include some semblance of privacy and security training.

I'm in cloud tech.

It's a business decision. You need talent to build these platforms (although Parler could have recruited some better designers) and the AWS platform has the most engineers to select from.

That being said, there's room for a third-party cloud service but fuck that's a massive undertaking. It's like planning and constructing a city.

2
abstr4ct 2 points ago +2 / -0

we just need a free speech colo.

Starlink is an ISP, not a hosting service. That's an important step though, since we need a means of accessing the internet that can't be shut off because you said something that violated the Terrorist Hate Speech Act of 2021 by saying "its OK to be white" on Gab.

1

mountain_ram [S] 13 points ago +13 / -0

These alternatives are for the people.

Gab has free speech. Bitchute doesn't have advertisers silencing us. OAN has stated vaccine truths and other unpopular truths. Newsmax loves vaccines.

1
Jaqen 1 point ago +1 / -0

Gab has free speech.

Is that demonstrably true? Let's have a look:

https://gab.com/about/tos

Not bad, as far as policy, but there are things there you need to understand. Namely the "Content Standards" section.

You absolutely can not do whatever you want on Gab, there are rules. Just like this site and most others.

2
Kraznaya 2 points ago +2 / -0

They have to have some rules or they will be shut down by the FedGov and incoming traffic to their site would be blocked by all ISPs.

Like the Stonetoss comic shows, if you want truly free speech you will have to build your own country with a government that is absolutist about it. That also means you'll have to be OK with things like child porn and being attacked globally as the place where CP peddlers go to seek refuge, which will almost certainly bring about international sanctions.

That said, Gab is as close to a free-speech service as we're going to get unless you go the "build your own government" route.

1
Jaqen 1 point ago +1 / -0

Agreed. My point is to firmly plant everyones noses into the fine print. Skip reading it at your own foolish peril.

This was precisely the problem with the old vanguard services. No one read the terms of service, before agreeing to them. Imagine their surprise when the exact things the terms spelled out, actually happened.

1
sackofwisdom 1 point ago +1 / -0

Add Brighteon.com to the list. Better UI than bitchute.

8
HeavenlyTrumpets 8 points ago +9 / -1

Gab has too much free speech. Not really, but a lot of people were fooled by media years back when media painted Gab as problematic somehow. These people who got fooled are the same ones who buckled and turned on fellow Patriots as soon as the media insisted the Patriots in Washington are "terrorists."

Disgusting people... those who keep falling in line while pretending to be doing something else.

What's wrong with Rumble? I hadn't heard of it until yesterday but Fleccas said his weekly videos will only be on Rumble.

5
mountain_ram [S] 5 points ago +6 / -1

I guess rumble pays people like youtube, don't know how they have money and what advertisers are supporting.....

Thats weird about fleccas, I figured he would have heard of bitchute and been on there. Rumble doesn't have anyone over there.

6
markolbb 6 points ago +6 / -0

I think he said that Dan Bongino owns it and he spoke with the CEO and higher-ups and he has faith that they will have a good relationship. Not sure why he didn't go with Bitchute or elsewhere.

1
zillat 1 point ago +1 / -0 (edited)

I use rumble and bit chute! Glad fleccas is moving, I expect alot of content on youtube to start posting on multiple sites, alot of homesteaders, and handy people are conservative, so the content on these site will get better and better as the platforms improve!

2
zillat 2 points ago +2 / -0

We need more than one, this desire to have one solution it the problem, it makes the 'one' vulnerable to attack!

1
Jaqen 1 point ago +1 / -0

Fleccas is principled but ultimately has to make money to continue his work. Rumble may be the best choice from a revenue standpoint.

8
Capitalism_Fuck_Yeah 8 points ago +8 / -0

I never used Twitter except for seeing Trump tweets. I have a gab account but I almost never use it. Social media is like a telephone. If the people you want to call are not on it than it's pretty much useless.

5
SikoraP13 5 points ago +5 / -0

Parler had an app, Gab didn't. So ease of access.

Parler had a far less clunky UI than Gab when I looked into Gab when Gab started up. Again, ease of access. Gab's servers at that point where also kind of spotty.

Parler also had a lot more of the prominent people posting on it. Content is king.

Hindsight is 20-20, and now it's the ONLY option, but let's not pretend it was an apples to apples comparison at the time.

2
Kraznaya 2 points ago +2 / -0

Gab did have an app way back in the day. That didn't last long.

I was going to try Parler. Then the signup form required a phone number to create an account.

No thanks.

Andrew Torba warned them about it. Those of us on Gab for a long time have known all the growing pains Gab had to go through. He was the first to get kicked off stuff and had to build from scratch. It’s taken years. It’s amazing that Parler getting deplatformed has all come as some sort of surprise to them.

3
UrbanCommando 3 points ago +3 / -0

I was all over Parler too. It just felt and looked cooler than GAB. I made the wrong choice.

we need to get a list of all the alt tech to use. so far I know of:

  • Linux Mint = Operating System
  • Brave = Internet Browser
  • DuckDuckGo = Search Engine
  • Gab = Twitter alt
  • Bitchute = youtube alt (somewhat, it's more for news. haven't found a decent alt yet)
  • protonmail = Email
3
Ruinerdown 3 points ago +3 / -0

3
superspathi 3 points ago +3 / -0

If the app requires a phone number to use it's a honeypot.

3
Honk4Trump 3 points ago +3 / -0

Bad news bro. A few weeks ago bitchute decided to partner with the ADL to remove “hate speech” from their platform. It’s only going to get worse from there.

2
Trump-My-President 2 points ago +2 / -0

Wow, didn’t take long for Wikipedia to catch up for Gab. So sick of this leftist control of the internet.

Gab is an American alt-tech social networking service known for its far-right and extremist userbase. Widely described as a haven for extremists including neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and the alt-right, it has attracted users and groups who have been banned from other social networks. Wikipedia

2
superspathi 2 points ago +2 / -0

Bitchute is trash. They've kneeled to the censorship too and their interface is garbage.

2
HenkZeilstra 2 points ago +2 / -0

Everyone at Parler is now exposed, all their metadata collected, their home addresses, photos, videos, dm’s their security was fcking shit

2
Rageof4wa 2 points ago +2 / -0

I was going to create a Parler account months ago until they HAD to have a phone number. I created a Gab account in May of 2019 when they had a plugin to allow conversations for articles/videos/etc when companies took those options away. I really like Gab and it is basically the only social media account that I have had. Besides a BS facebook account that I used so I could play some Zynga games over a decade ago.

2

Gab is the way to go. Tried to tell everyone months ago. All you people whining about how Gab isn't working, they freaking got like 2 million people signing up since Friday. They have more servers being installed now. BE PATIENT. GabTV is also here and they're working on a Gab phone that doesn't spy on you.

The sheep will flock wherever the shepherd leads them.

Do not punish the sheep. Become the good shepherd the world needs and tend to your flock.

2
Ep1ctetus 2 points ago +2 / -0

In short, sheep are sheep, and they’ll always be sheep, so it’s juts better for them to luck out and find a good shepherd?

I think it’s more like —- some people are tip of the spear in providing information you’re looking for, so you “flock” to them when they serve that purpose, and leave when they don’t.

“Following” is synonymous with “getting informed when this person posts.” It doesn’t mean they’re a leader of their followers.

1
Jaqen 1 point ago +1 / -0

In short, sheep are sheep, and they’ll always be sheep

I was a sheep once. Humans are capable or miraculous change and adaptation. For me, I had a moment where I decided I wanted to master certain topics. So I hit the books, put in the time, and started making progress.

so it’s juts better for them to luck out and find a good shepherd?

Not luck. It takes willpower. The will to teach, and the willingness to learn. We all play a role, working together to not only improve ourselves, but those around us.

I think it’s more like —- some people are tip of the spear in providing information you’re looking for, so you “flock” to them when they serve that purpose, and leave when they don’t.

Sure. Those are the "mavens" of Malcom Gladwell's Tipping Point. The trend setters. The leaders.

“Following” is synonymous with “getting informed when this person posts.” It doesn’t mean they’re a leader of their followers.

In a way they are leaders, in that they are influential, which is a vital component of leadership. Whether or not they possess the other necessary qualities for leadership depends on the specific example.

The type of leadership I was suggesting was that of a technologist. A steward for those who lack technical savvy. The ladder of which describes many people, since the digital landscape is relatively new and rapidly changing.

Unfortunately there are many bad shepherds in the technology sector, who are driven by greed, instead of by the will to educate.

Examples of good shepherds were some of the earlier linux evangelists that championed privacy rights, and freedom of expression. Unfortunately that movement was not very approachable due to underlying complexity of the systems involved, the haughty attitudes of those running things there, and the relative momentum of the industry towards "friendly" (aka dumbed down) devices and interfaces.

zillat 1 point ago +1 / -0

DonJr2032 1 point ago +1 / -0

Because infrastructure is complex and expensive, especially for startups. Some smart ass might come in here and say "Nuh uhh, just do X Y & Z and you'll be up". BS. Amazon made it easy to get up and going without a load of money for all the infrastructure and expertise involved in setting up the infrastructure.

1
ViolettFem 1 point ago +1 / -0

There's NOTHING wrong with Parler, let's not start attacking alt tech for not being the perfect model we decide they needed to be. I'm not into cannibalism esp. at this stage of the Overlord game (other than the R party being dead to us).

Most people have to find out for themselves. It was obvious that Parler was fake and gay, and probably a honeypot. Seriously, phone numbers and drivers licenses, and they were STILL "verifying" people who were impersonators. I know for sure Code Monkey, and there were others prior to that.

It was obvious that they'd get shitcanned by AWS, and guess what, now the SJWs at AWS have ALL their data backed up. Most people don't listen until it's too late.

Understand something. Gab isn't just another company leveraging the services of other companies to create a product. Gab has created all of their own tech. They run all of this tech on hardware that they physically buy, build, and install. They aren't using someone else video player for GabTV. They made their own. They aren't using a third party service for video encoding and compression, they built specialized GPU optimized hardware.

Gab is such an existential threat to the establishment that not only has the company been banned from every single payment processor in existence but the Founder and CEO has been depersoned essentially. Andrew Torba and his family, US citizens, are blacklisted from VISA. Think about that: https://news.gab.com/2020/06/26/social-credit-score-is-in-america-visa-blacklisted-my-business-and-my-family-for-building-gab/
