Universal suffrage did not exist in the constitution until after the Civil War. The founding fathers were against the masses voting. And that was because 51% of the people would happily vote for policies that harm the other 49%. This concept, known as the “tyranny of the majority” is precisely why we have the electoral college. Without it, New York and California would effectively be able to dictate to the nation who our next President is
