I think this should apply to more than just porn as well, like drugs for example. If kids were raised with proper values and knowledge about them, they likely would make much better choices when it comes to substances. It's an argument I have against actual, genuine, good Christians all the time. That their own experiences with ruinous desires and drives in the past cause them to pull back far too hard in the opposite direction. My stepdad, for instance, was a sleep around druggo in his younger days. Now he's perhaps the best man I've ever met (don't tell him I said that, he's also got a big head,) though still flawed, naturally. But some of his dealings with my brothers and sister as he raised them was too strict, causing them to try and break the reins, which in many ways they did, and in many ways they're still now suffering from those bad youthful decisions. "Dad, I was home five minutes late" should not be a fight. It should be "Well, next time I want you home by 9:30, not 10. If you can get home by 9:30, we can go back to 10." Shoot, maybe even warn that WILL BE what happens next time. Maybe establish beforehand that 5 minutes late due to traffic is okay, but then that 6 minutes late is actually LATE late, and not "one minute late." You have to be rational and reasonable. Home 5 minutes late is disobedience, yes, maybe wilful, maybe neglectful. But if you go straight to "you're grounded for a month," because you assume that your kid is getting stoned with some whore, well, you're making yourself the enemy, and your kid is going to want to do the things that damage the enemy... which may just be getting stoned with some whore.

Finding a church group might be the hardest part. I've been to a few churches in my area and I've yet to find a good one. When I was 10 years old, I got my first exposure to porn. My parents weren't tech savvy. I was allowed unrestricted internet access, and parental controls weren't really a thing back then. I was innocently looking for stuff about Pokemon cards, and clicked on some site that had the words "private collection" in the name.
That was the beginning of a long, dark road for me. At first it was just softcore stuff, but over time, I kept being drawn to more extreme stuff. It got to the point where after I got off, I felt physically sickened by what I had seen, but I was addicted. I kept saying I would quit. Sometimes I could last for a few weeks. I think my record was 3 months, but I always caved. I still struggle with it. Hardly a day goes by that I'm not tempted. Sometimes, the temptation is so strong that I want to abandon the fight altogether.
And don't let anyone tell you that it's nobody else's business. It's caused problems with my wife. I would get my rocks off in private and have nothing left for her. It's made the whole thing feel very mechanical to me. There was no emotional component. I'm still trying to get that back.
Why am I telling you all this? To let anyone who's struggling know that they're not alone. A lot of us have been through the same thing. The shame is what makes you feel alone. You're not. It's a hard battle, a daily battle, but it can be fought. I'm fighting it. I'm nothing special. I'm weak. I fail. Still, I fight, and if I can, you can.
