To me it's starting to look like decentralized social media alternatives are the only solution to the problem we're having of censorship. People are hopping onboard with Parler and others, but what happens when they turn corrupt? It's not hard to imagine. Our online discussions should not be controlled by a handful of people, even if it's the saint-level guys running TD. I want to see people move toward platforms that are basically uncontrolled and hosted in some way like torrents or cryptocurrencies. IRC chat is another good example. So basically no one can shut it down. Anyone aware of anything that looks promising in this area? And do you agree or do you see problems with a decentralized platform?

Theoretically you can set up a Mastodon node and federate with other services you like.

Gab started trying to do this. But one of the problems with trying to create a direct competitor to a Social Media site is that lots of the trash will immediately flock to it, and it will be a bit rough until things start settling out. I think with a lot of the purges, Gab at least now has a chance to reach critical mass of good content versus trolls.

It's kind of like the Cuban refugees fleeing Castro. A ton of based, later to be patriotic and productive, Cubans came over. But Castro also emptied out the prisons to send over too, sending a ton of criminals mixed in as well.
