For those of you recommending precious metals (gold and silver) must it be physical, or will putting my money into a gold or silver ETF (GLD or SLV) work as well?

Also, I need to be able to have access to my savings so I can use it to pay for expenses if needed. Not sure if I can do that with gold or silver.
