I'm being naive in my daydreams, but it sounds amazing to me that I could just buy a few acres in appalachia, cut down and glue together some trees to build a cabin, add a generator and an outhouse, and have myself a place to bug out if SHTF. Maybe even get satellite internet (or hopefully Starlink widely available sooner than later..) so I can keep up with comms while away from civilization.
I'm sure some of you pedes are more knowledgeable than this city slicker about the trials and tribulations of such a plan. It sounds good in theory - again for a temporary getaway, not permanent home - but maybe there's a lot I'm not considering. Any ideas?

Money and loads of hard work.
buy land and find a builder

How long is your SHTF plan? That impacts the planning. A camping trip cabin is easy - a few acres would work - you wouldnt need a well, just enough jugs of water and a clue on how to reduce gray water needs. Hunkering down this time of year - even just until spring requires a LOT more planning and effort. Bushcraft is a good search term - lots of videos on how did they do that 100 years ago. RV living vids will give lots of insight on living with less. Another thing being done is converting cargo trailers into RV trailers. Lots of vids also
Hard work. Find land with water running through, can be used to make power. if not you will need a well. RV/ camper is a good start. We already have some land, just need to build.
Not that hard at all. I have one and put a cheap solar system on the roof, drilled a well, put in a wood stove and plumbing, dug an outhouse, got a decent generator, cut down and seasoned about 10 cords of wood, and stocked it with about a year’s worth of food—mostly dehydrated. The land and your structure will determine cost, of course, but a simple cabin built with your own lumber, is a time cost. All in, I’m at around 50k, mostly for the land.
Well done! Did you teach yourself how to do all that, or does it run in the family?
just buy a small house in a rural town at least 100 miles from any town of more than 50K... and at least 10 miles from any town at all.
1 acre of land and an RV/motor home/trailer camper, solar panel kit, and a lot of fucking grit
