The two sides are too close to each other for any kind of war for supremacy, any victory would be a pyrrhic one for either side, so if God forbid there is a shooting war, it would be to settle contested areas between the two countries rather than to rule over all of the USA.
Although the land is totally worth fighting for and that would happen eventually.
