Gulag Archipelago is an absolute must-read -- but just be warned, it's really gruesome and can be very, very depressing.

I read this about two years ago. Short read. Real life is currently worse - no chance of finding love when nobody will come within 6 feet of you, and all the girls are wearing facemasks. If Winston tried to make a move on his love interest in today's real life version he would probably be jailed for attempted rape. The other major difference is the tele-screen is in your hand, not on the wall, and it's microphone has background noise cancelling.
