These platforms should never be allowed to ask for phone numbers. Or even real names.

Parler said they ask for phone numbers because they dont data mine and want to make sure it's a real person creating an account. Parler has censored right wing investigative journalists so I never created an account with them. They are a limited hangout

See I always felt there was something up with them... I will always like Gab the best. Gab was really meant with us in mind. I even spoke to the CEO a few times. He treats us like normal human beings! Try getting that out of "Jack"...

Hand out your identity like you hand out your PIN#.

As soon as they want real info on me I'm out.

Like for usernames I make new ones for every site. Passwords too. Emails, I like 10minutemail.com A LOT. Profile pictures, I like thispersondoesnotexist.com A LOT. But a phone number? That’s a little too close for comfort... that makes it feel like they’re collecting on purpose.

The phone number thing was a no deal for me. I wanted to join parler but I was absoulutely not giving my phone number so they could sell it. Especially since i have VOIP and my # isn't listed.

I even hesitate to give my number to anyone I know in real life. I’d rather an email, or a chat app.

That was the beginning of the end.

They’ve already got that information from Facebook & other apps & ways. They don’t need info from Parler.

That's my point. Parler is chickenfeed compared to the telemetry(data) the main social platforms have been collecting on everyone over decades. Legally and illegally. They have lost in court over invasions of privacy. And we still give them more telemetry everytime we use their services.

Damn. I had just made an account but never got a chance to piss anybody off.

I would if they didnt ask for a cell#. That's just asking for a shit-ton of spam txts if nothing else. No thanks.

that was a concern of mine, although be somewhat of a confrontational type anyway, I just said, what the hell, I'm sure the attorney general of my state would be entertained.

The main “hacker” just has all the publicly available data, clowns have (and always did have) the rest thanks to AWS.

Bingo.

There have been other mass data attacks like this alleged in the past & they were fake. What proof is there?

Having just joined Parler on Saturday, it doesn't affect me, but others may care.

Proof is irrelevant. What they are saying is scary about an alleged 'parler hack' is also something that tw/fb/etc do on an industrial scale 24/7/365.

A relative of mine made an account on there and was posting Pro Trump stuff. This is just great 😓

AppleSauceBoss [S] 1 point ago +2 / -1

If they are on there then they are also on FB/TW/INST/etc.

And they posted all that stuff there too.

So what's the diff?

As someone here before the internet, you can thank all the current social media services for conditioning you into thinking that was a safe idea.

You were conditioned into it.

Prior to FB, EVERYONE said NEVER EVER EVER give your real identity out to anyone on the internet EVER.

Now all the above require some form of proof of identity or payment to access any meaningful parts of their services, over the internet, and sometiomes for meaningless parts of their services.

You were conditioned.
