I asked the same question the other day and was told Italy is a first world nation with it's own satellites. If some of the control or access is hidden in the Vatican City how would any of us know either way?

Or maybe they turned down the exposure on it so you couldn't see anything going on. There were some fireworks or gunshot sounds heard too.
