He was Austrian and joined a national socialist movement. After Germany and Austria were rejoined together he became part of the German army and a fairly high ranking NCO. There were a number of men in the German armed forces that weren't necessarily Hitler supporters but had to take an oath to him and Germany anyway. This doesn't appear to be the case with him though. He seemed to support Hitler and applied for membership to the SA as well.
