If you look at statistics on the age and gender of the victims, a super-majority of them are teenage boys. Not girls, not pre-pubescent. Instead almost all of the victims are sexually able and male.
It was homosexual predation, not pedophilic predation.
The media portrayed it as a pedophile scandal for maximum outrage but also because they were trying to court the homosexual vote at that time, and didn't want to portray the priests as homosexuals.
