It's possible he just likes the style but I still find it ironic he's basically wearing the flag whether he realises it or not of the same people oppressing him which is meant to symbolise fighting against oppression. He could have his own ideas of fighting oppression that are more down to earth such as not wearing a mask. He might not realise the dictionary has been rewritten and oppression now means something quite different. For example if someone isn't obeying your command they are oppressing you.
